I have the honour to enclose, in original to be

returned, a letter dated the 10th instant which we have

received from the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation applying for permission to make certain alterations in the

securities deposited with us as Trustees for the Hong Kong

Government in connection with the Note Issue of that Bank.

At present prices the value of the securities, if

this exchange is permitted, will exceed the amount of the

Reserve which the Bank is required to deposit and we propose, with Mr Secretary Chamberlain's concurrence, to accede to the Bank's request. I enclose for the signature of Sir R. Meade

the letter to the Bank of England which is required for the

completion of the transaction.
